My apprenticeship and some love matters

2007 has been a great start for me --endless blessings and opportunities come along plenty. Yesterday I was at the house/studio of Melvin Dewees, a full-time artist here in Houston. I stretched 5 canvases for him, they weren't just any kind of canvases because they were huge. He showed me a lot of the projects that he's currently doing and he mentioned that he will need a lot of help from me to finish them. Of course I didn't turn down the offer. He's going to pay me and at the same time, teach me painting techniques that he already know and also how to use oil, since I only use acrylic paint. There's this project that he offered me, I am to finish an unfinished painting done in 1963 by an artist from New York. His friend owns the painting and wanted Melvin to do the work but since he's so busy with all the projects that he has, he seeked help from me. To me the painting was rather interesting, it was painted in a cubist style. It's not my forte but worth trying. It had small unfinished parts that I thought was interesting and gave the painting more character but the owner's being really anal about it haha. I'm really excited on what's to come, especially this saturday when Melvin and his wife comes back from Cabo. He said that he's going to call me up because I need to gesso and lay down the basic tones of the paintings he's about to do. I guess you can say that I'm going to be his apprentice, which is what I've been wanting for a long time now. I hope this will help me make a name to the art scene here in Houston.

On my personal life, I witnessed the power of the simple words "Thank You". During the weekend, my mom cleaned the bathroom and changed my bedsheets. I was surprised when I got home seeing how clean it was. So yesterday, I sent a text message to my mom saying thank you for the things that she did. When she got home from work, she approached me and said I was welcome and she doesn't mind doing it if she had the time. I also got a hug from my mom, which I thought was really sweet. Yesterday also, I treated my dad to lunch. He was about to pay and I insisted that I will be the one paying for our meal. I just thought that it's about time that I started treating my parents, since I've always been the one asking for stuff when I was younger. It's time to give it back. I hope they're really proud and happy having me. I mean, they always say that when they give me cards during Valentine's, New Years, birthday, or whatever occasion they feel like giving me a card.

It was also yesterday morning that I thought the world's going to end for me but thank God it didn't. Raycyn and I had a misunderstanding, well you know some issues and stuff. I believe that it comes in every relationship. I learned that even if she's your partner, she's still a person and needs time for herself. I thought that we won't talk for days. I don't think I can ever do that. I'm just crazy about her you know and I must say, I really do love her. I was even thinking of ways what to do on how to handle the situation because I really thought we won't be able to talk. I said to myself that I hope it will be as soon as possible because I wouldn't be able to stand it. So when I was eating my cereals, she let my phone ring. In all excitement, I called her right away and tadaaaaa!!! we're ok now and I can never be happier. She's starting school tomorrow and I'm really proud of her that she's all ready for it. Man, I can never ask for anything more. She's got the looks and the brains. She's an A student and I'm really inspired by her to strive more with my academics. She told me yesterday that she dreamt of me and that I asked her to marry me. I even asked her parents out on a date to seek their approval. I thought that was really sweet knowing that. Everytime I think about it, it just makes me smile. To me, she's the one I would like to spend the rest of my life with. I can't wait for the time I introduce her to my parents because I know that they'll tell me that I've made a wise decision hehehe :)

As Eden Burns, HIWI, and HCC art department website

I am really happy that the band As Eden Burns (you can check them out on my top friends), is using the logo that i designed for them. It's in all their posters for their shows this summer and shirts that they're selling for a reasonable price at http://www.asedenburns.com

I have their cd too, and these guys deserve more fans to what they already have. So, that's why I'm here letting you know about them. Lol.

I also got an email recently from the organizers of Houston It's Worth It. HIWI was an event that I joined last.. umm.. I can't remember but now they're coming out with a book. The email that they sent me mentioned that they have chosen one of my pictures to be published in the book. I don't know what picture they chose but I'm excited for it. One of my babies is coming out to the limelight! Lol. I hope one of my paintings make it out too. I need more exposure.

Ok, I'm not sure if  I should say this but I'll just put it anyway, but I'm at the HCC art department's website. They put my photo there, a really dorky one but I like it.

Setting Goals for the summer (1)

This is going to get sucky. I should be setting goals for this summer, especially that I have nothing to do but work. Ok, since I have been the workaholic that I am, I should find time for some enjoyment and relaxation. Well, going to the gym is an option. I know I should soon be losing the pounds I gained during the holidays (the reason why I hate them) and do more physical stuff rather than just being here infront of the computer and sitting on this lazy chair. I should be saving for the things I want, a new digital SLR camera and a new laptop, the laptop is not as much of a need right now since I don't use the computer that much unlike before but the camera is pretty much a need. My cousin and I should start our business soon so we can build a reputation and start getting customers right away. I should be saving also for school, which starts in August -I think. Plus, save for other stuff like for my car, etc.

So yeah, I'm making a checklist on things to do:
1. Save for DSLR and tuition
2. Get a gym membership
3. Get more exposure to the arts scene
4. Draw/paint/shoot/sculpt more. Be more productive.
5. Start mounting and framing works for my own exhibition on September.
6. Learn guitar with Long.
7. Get-up.

Well, that's my list for now. I'll see if I need to add more or even start doing some stuff because I only have two months to spend for summer. After that, it will all be busy busy busy.

But of course, no matter how busy I will be, I'll find time for my girl Chee. (hey it rhymes!)

The Band Story

A forgotten memory came to me. How can I forget that I was once part of a band. I used to play the Conga for a band named, "TRUTH", the story behind the name was nothing complicated. Our goal was to be truthful with what we played. We played because we found joy in it, not even thinking of the people who would praise us for doing it. I miss those times that we'd hangout at Fredison's pad. Man, he's probably the most passionate guitarist I've ever seen. One time, it was his birthday and we were just hanging out at the school's courtyard. That was probably around late noon and we don't have anything else to do. Since it was his birthday, I kept on asking him what he wanted to do because we've been good friends and I wanted to treat him but instead, he turned down my offer of a sumptuous pigging out, he took his guitar and just played the whole time. Man that was inspiring! So we just hung-out with the rest of the group at his place, one time we were practicing for this battle of the bands and since it was a hot sunny afternoon, everyone got lazy and found a place to sleep on. I slept on the floor LOL! But yeah, we weren't even a hardcore metal band, as you would expect it to be. We actually played Tuck Andres' cover of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror", Eric Clapton's "Signe", and Eraserhead's "Fine Times".  We didn't win but we surely captured the crowd's hearts. It was ok, we enjoyed the experience anyway. Yes, sure was fine times those days. A truly miss-able experience. I hope I can see those guys again especially that we've all gone separate ways. If my memory serves me correct, I was that guy: sitting alone on a blue bench, sketching, listening to his CD player with a huge conga beside him. Yeah, that was me.

You're happy, I'm happy. Yay us! *26*
